Sampath bank 9 months ended operational results are out with positive bottom line. It is 27.8% increase of profit with 27.55 of EPS from 21.56 comparing to corresponding period. SAMP has done well considering tough challenges in banking sector. Low volume of treasury operations has kept SAMP on top position among others. SAMP is an undervalued counter under current market conditions. SAMP with high net asset value would be more attractive & profitable as mid to long term investment.

most undervalued banking share in the CSE. Hopefully another good qtr will push this towards 36+EPS.

I expect some sought of a big scrip dividend in march.

Don't think they can go beyond an EPS of Rs. 35.00. But yes, a decent script dividend is definitely on the table.

This counter is very much undervalued and full of potential. Will definitely be a huge hit in FY16.

Sampath & HNB has shown growth because of low provisioning. COMB is very conservative, they have taken large provision in excess of 1 billion.
All banks had a bad quarter, they will suffer more if international trade slow, local environment is tough

Raider if they achieve same last qtr eps with marginal growth in profitability, then they can easily achieve 36 EPS

SGT impact of Rs. 784 mil which translates into a Rs. 4.50 impact on EPS.

I was thinking if they achieve 30% growth over last quarter, EPS will be 10.40-4.50=5.90. Therefore, annual EPS will be around 35.

But who knows what else could happen.

I thought they were to adjust the SGT payment from the reserves and not to touch on the present EPS. Please correct me if I am wrong.

@glad you're correct, SGTpayment is done from the reserves. It doesn't impact the pnl.

I was reading the NDB article on daily ft and it clearly states how SGT will be charged.

Yes, the NDB article does say it is charged from reserves.

In that case, SAMP will definitely hit an EPS well above 36, maybe 39 even.

However, SGT is still a loss to the shareholder.

Another point is once the SGT is settled from reserves the net equity decreases. Is it not increasing the ROE (return of equity = Net profit / Equity) of SAMP? This is similar to the outcome of capital reduction of an entity.
ROE is one of major performance measures all stakeholders are looking for.

Ssh, if the govt. gets to know this they will charge more SGT (from the equity) and say it is good for the company.

It does boost numbers but actually there's a deterioration of shareholder value.

Anyways, the ROE calculation is arbitrary. So if the bank really is honest to its shareholders, ROE will be calculated with the necessary adjustments.

Also, ROE is calculated using average equity therefore, since SGT impact is only in the last quarter, ROE will only be minimally affected.

These top banks should rebound at any time. We should keep under our radar now. Already two months in over in 2016. Only one month to finish first quarter. After three quarters we are in 2017. So it is very close for next trend in stocks.

This in not the end of world for Sri-Lankan banks. Some are gems. There are few hidden gems as well. If we can find one, we can enjoy more than 10 baggrs in the mid and long term.

How about V-shape recovery in stocks!

halting trading entire day means announcement is really good or bad. If it's a normal dividend or scrip dividend trade halt will only happen for few hrs before its gets lifted.
