Feb 12, Colombo:

The Sri Lankan government has taken a policy decision not to import rice.

The Secretary to the President has submitted a report to the cabinet of Ministers informing that although the price of rice has risen in the market, government’s decision not to import rice has saved US $ 100 million in foreign exchange.

According to the report, paddy harvesting of the Maha Season has commenced and it is expected to yield about 3 million metric tons of paddy.

The government has decided to provide a guaranteed price of Rs. 50 for a kilo of paddy and a program has been launched to purchase paddy form the farmers.

I was thinking different,

we need to import rice but we should add more value to our "පාරම්පරික සහල් " ( i don't know English name) b'cos it has value.
and we need to promote cinnamon, pepper, vanilla... it has more income compare to rice...
very less space (1 Square kilometer) can gain more profit than rice...

Yes but we don't need to import rice. We can produce it in our own land. then farmer will earn more. gov expenditures will reduced. Good for country Smile

Yeah even we can export rice too. Yes they will work to promote cinnamon , pepper , vanilla exports.

Seems you messed import and export  Question

No @KavinduTM

what i mean if we need to make 1Kg Rice total cost(farmer to market) let say examples price LKR 50 but we can import 1kg rice less than that...

We need to convert our farmers rice to high profit plantation(cinnamon , pepper , vanilla... )
then our farmers have more income... country also have more income...

B'cos countries like India,PK,China produced very low cost rice,onion,potato...

we have 65000km2 Very Happy Very Happy to do all... so we can not waste our lands...we have clean lots of green forest in our country so we can not clean more...

Ex: countries like US sell airplane make million profit... countries like china sell small items in high qty.

Aha i get it.

Actually that is a good idea. But most of our traditional farmers are stuck to paddy. So they need a lot of contribute from gov to change. Government will launch some plan equal to this in upcoming years as now they can't contribute to plantations much. They are in a hard situation. So for now, it is good to stop importing.

However are you sure about below statement?
"what i mean if we need to make 1Kg Rice total cost(farmer to market) let say examples price LKR 50 but we can import 1kg rice less than that"

Good point @ColomboCSE.

I remember GR was always telling about pepper exports. So i believe they will work on it.

Yeah we can't supply a large qty. So it's better to focus in quality products.
Some other guy mentioned it. As i remember, that was @MarketResearch

No colombo CSE is wrong - cinemon and other things if prices drop we cant eat. there should be rice farmed 1st. in paddy fields we cant farm other things. we have to find the ways to increase the crop and quality of rice

Yes If we found good way to make with low price , high quality rice then of'cos it's good...

BUT you need to face reality.we are in global economy...
our grand parents have to spend weeks to travel country to country  now situation change..
our grand parents did not have internet...
daily vegetable ships move India to other countries...
china capture manufacturing markets...

with this big competition we need to do what we can do best..

@ThilinaM wrote:cinemon and other things if prices drop we cant eat

if disaster situation we can not survivors only paddy fields

@Thilina now we need to feed 21 million peoples with 65000km2 lands but peoples will doubled in few years and land not...

@colombo CSE - your view is economical u have not seen reality due to your education.

it dosent matter other contrys make rice for 10 rs and we make for 100rs.

srilanka can reduce its cost by eating there own rice and save money.
when import we have to pay other countrys.

we get income from garments say   100
and pay for eating to other contrys   150
its -50

my methord
income 100
eating cost (we produce ) 0
profit 100

now dont say we can export cinemon and buy rice bla bla
its not practicle and very risky . we have to depend on other contrys

KEEP REMEMBER BASIC INVESTMENT RULE
PAY YOURSELF FIRST

DONT PAY OTHER COUNTRYS A PENNY

200% agree with Teller SL must make its own food . and 500% taxed on forign food. export taxes should be zero. or gvt should pay export companys  Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

this is our country /not like past idiots who beleave fake economics. now generation know the truth.
they can build SL 1 of most powerfull country in next 30 years. we will give the lead to that.

Europians bring specialisation to cerate the dependance to them.
do u know how mutch americans are selfish (please read there tax rules on other countrys)

Oil medicine are not priority food is priority. we can reduce transport cost and have other alternatives.
we can live 70 year without medicine.

CAN WE LIVE 3 DAYS WITHOUT FOOD???

when we have our own food we can bring SL cost of consumption to zero.
then all export revenue is profit. difference should be invested globally.

eat your own food and save other expences . do maximum export . srilanka can grow 20% rate.

Chicken/fish and rice should be never imported to SL exept 500% tax all should produce in SL.

@colombo CSE - any way im little biased thease days im highly invested in paddy fields. ha ha Laughing Laughing
you are wrong . we have to fid ways to reduce expences. ways to become indipendent.

Job we are slaving. you are proposing SL to become slave of other countrys.
we have to specialise not what we can do best . we have to specialise on what is important.

Stopping imports is better, but contributing to those plantations are good too. We have to balance both of them. Otherwise system will be jammed when special situation occurs.

However i also have some kinda sick which is not to depend on others.

In my scenario, Its Me Vs Government.

You know it's so hard to become self sufficient as a person against government services. But i planned not to purchase electricity from gov. I ll produce using solar panels or using some other technology.

I won't purchase water from gov. That's not hard btw.

And if we stop importing other food too (such as corn, vegetables, fruits) It will be so good.
We need to focus in increasing exports as well as reducing imports. We must limit imports only to essential things. And that will encourage local businesses too. GDP will be increased. Gov expenditures will be reduced. Good for country Smile

However we can't be self sufficient totally, But it will be good for us (as a human or as a country) limiting the ways we depend on others. Which means we can use our own way. own path to victory.

However during times of 1st king parakramabahu, we were self sufficient. That was the times that world used to call srilanka as the "Oriental granary" "පෙරදිග ධාන්‍යාගාරය". We were self sufficient from foods. Even we exported rice to many other countries. And that times, Srilanka was a "Developed Country" .

But after the invasions of so many intruders such as kalinga maagha and other "chola" intruders, Srilanka was totally destroyed. It happened during ages of weak kings.

After those attacks, Srilanka is still struggling to develop. over 1000 years. its still being a developing country.

Food is a basic need. At the time of hungry ,we can not eat monetary notes or coins. Especially related to rice, we should not consider profit and Loss.
