If that is the case, halting trading is also not a solution.

Exactly.. Why market to be stopped for 30 minutes if closing the market is not a solution? No need a regulator...

Special situations require special solutions..Letting market to crash only helps few, but affects many including the economy...

Why do you like it? Is it because we have to go to the share market to buy shares, lot of people are there to buy shares and corona would be spread? Very Happy

Closing the market is not a solution, the effect will be worst once it is reopen. Automatic market adjustment to be happen and will readjusted when the situation is normal.

This is not a problam limited to our country but the entire world.

Unlike vegetables, shares are bought and sold on online platforms. A trader doesn't need to be physically present in the stock exchange.

It should be possible to keep CDS systems up and running with minimal staffing.

Colombo Stock Market, S&P has lost more than 10% of its market value within 1 hour of trading today.
CSE is not a critical financial service and there is no urgency to keep the Stock Market open under current circumstances.
By keeping the CSE open what are they trying to achieve?
Are they trying to help the Government to overcome CoronaVirus or give an opportunity to cunning ruthless opportunist to gain at the expenses of innocent local investors.
Further this will only allow foreign investors to take our foreign currency reserves away.
Most prudent thing is for CSE to remain close until we overcome CoronaVirus.

I also in the same opinion. Most of us hardly have much money to invest in. So, sometimes market closure might give us temporary relief. (and it proved Friday that it won't be always the case)

However, unscheduled market closures create a bad impression, particularly among foreign investors. They have all the right to sell at whatever the prices set by the market and withdraw their funds within a short period, especially in a crisis situation.

But, if CSE continuously declares market holidays amidst pessimistic market conditions, it violates the rights of such foreign investors and it makes a bad preceding for the future too. That will be a reason for eroding confidence in CSE as a reliable market as  CSE is only an option for them.

Therefore, CSE needs to make all effort to operate as planned at the beginning of the year (unless govt declared bank holidays) - at least restricted hours. I guess they have Business Continuity Plan (PCP) and can operate even from elsewhere.

It is a decision of a particular investor whether or not to participate market activity.

Strongly agree. It would be prudent to close down CSE for two weeks in order to protect small fishes from Sharks.

CSE need not to close.Stocks are sensitive and goes ups and down.Should not close and try to artificialy support the free fall. This is not about small fish vs sharks it's about greedy gamblers vs real investors.Good shares would bounch back speculation shares would vanish.Let's market behave natural ways without any artificial closures.

India is on a lockdown but Indian market is on so cse should kept open. This is not a good approach. Exchange rate getting higher day by day. Foreigners keep loosing money. Yep there is no such thing as fish and 🦈 only greed and fear
