As far as I see in CSE, short to mid term is more profitable than holding long term. Example:
LMF had its highs of around 150 in 2011, and now its 140 in 2020.
AEL had its highs around 27 in 2011, today 26.
RCL was around 150 in 2015, today its 135.
GRAN was 90 around 2016 and today around 110+
These are fundamentally strong.

so whats the ideal time period to hold? and what benefit do you ACTUALLY get from holding long term, apart from dividends?
Can you please relate to your own experiences and preferred length for holding?
What do most of you think as the gain that should be realised?
I stick to 10-15% or more and realize profits, and I am happy about it. However many always advise me to hold for long term to see benefits. Am i doing something wrong?

Please correct me if I am wrong with my facts..

If you get around 8% dividend on your investment every year and reinvest it again into your capital you can double your capital in 7 - 8 years. Also if you continue to keep investing into the market your returns will keep on increasing. So you can double your capital every 5 - 6 if you picked the correct stocks and stick with them for the long term. This way your return rate is 17 - 20%.

This is not a sure thing, and yes people loose even in the long term if you pick the wrong stock. Also the price is just a reflection of market sentiment. There might have been stock splits, rights issues, scrip dividends, etc. to show a low share price but could have given higher returns to the investors.

And yes there are times in which it is better to sell off the stock and move on to something else.

if it is a good dividend paying stock then you should hold it forever. but if you can get excellent capital gain, for example, you have bought sampath for 130 and now its price went to 180 then you should sell.
holding long term always profitable.

At the currenr prices only stocks u can think about holding long term are banksx financial companies, hotels and telecommunication. Most of the others are overvalued at the moment at least fairly valued. In hotels and not so strong financial companies and small banks are at a risk of bancrupcy. So we are left with banks and high end financial companies and telecommunication companies.
Or else keep short -medium term construction companies like TKYO ACL AEL. whatver goes up should come down eventually. Hence the risk.

I believe in riding the technical trends (unlike Buffett, whose "favorite holding period is forever").

You would make less money by holding forever. Exit while the price gets into a downtrend. Get back in when the uptrend resumes. EMA 12 and EMA 26 trading strategy can show you how.

I don't think you should sell on reaching a percentage profit target, because you may lose the opportunity for greater profits. For example, I am holding a share (CSD) that has increased by 34% since I bought it. But, since it is still in an uptrend, I have no intention of selling.

I generally follow the trading strategy mentioned above. Combining fundamental analysis and technical analysis generally gives better results.
