Actually being technical, there is no such thing as the retail investor. There is a definition for Retail Individual Investor. This is what most of us refer to as Retail Investors. Quoting from the document slstock mentioned:
'Retail Individual Investor' shall mean an individual investor who subscribes for a maximum of 3,000 shares or value of not more than Rs. 100,000/- in a particular share class whichever is higher.
