Sri Lanka’s e-commerce retailer Kapruka Holdings Limited debuts trading on CSE
KAPRUKA HOLDINGS LIMITED (KPHL.N0000) Kapruk10

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s e-commerce retailer Kapruka Holdings Limited commenced trading on the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) on Friday as it listed the shares on the main CSE board under the “Retailing” sector.

The IPO, the first in 2022, was oversubscribed 5.8 times on the first day and Kapruka became the first e-commerce company to be listed in the CSE in its history.

“I couldn’t think of a better company than the leader in that segment to start what I hope is just the beginning of a lot more IT and E-Commerce companies coming to the capital market this year,” Dumith Fernando, Chairman of the CSE said after the debut trade was marked with a special Bell Ringing Ceremony.

“These are the companies that we, as a stock exchange, love to see come into this market.”

He said over Rs. 120 billion worth of new capital was raised through the CSE in 2021 with 13 companies listed

Dulith Herath, the Chairman and CEO of Kapruka Holdings, said the company had never raised a single rupee from any individual investors before.

“I hope that the Kapruka story will encourage more and more tech companies to come to the market,” he said.

The shares rose over 44 percent to close at 22.30 rupees compared to its IPO price of 15.40 rupees a share on the debut trading day.

Kapruka rolls out sub brand ‘Soldout.lk’ as marketplace for second-hand goods

Kapruka, the pioneering e-commerce platform that has evolved into Sri Lanka’s largest locally owned global e-com platform, has announced plans to launch a ‘used goods marketplace’ as a fully owned new sub-brand – ‘Soldout.lk’.

The marketplace will serve as an e-com platform for used goods, connecting buyers and sellers seamlessly, with added features such as home delivery and order fulfillment. The market stands to significantly benefit the local automobiles and property sales trade industries, which have an active second-hand market. ‘Soldout.lk’ will be developed to be similar to ‘Craigslist’, the globally famous marketplace for trade and second-hand goods. To enhance the effectiveness of the marketplace, Kapruka plans to establish a grassroots-level social dealer network across the island, under the new venture.

Kapruka aims to fund its growth plans through a share issuance from the upcoming IPO, which will include the development and launch of Soldout.lk. The e-com site plans to launch the specialised used goods marketplace which would be one of the first-of-its-kind in Sri Lanka – a timely intervention given the significant increase in public interest towards purchasing second-hand goods through online resale platforms to meet their needs throughout the pandemic.

Soldout.lk will be initiated as a separate business unit under Kapruka E-commerce Ltd., which is a fully owned subsidiary of Kapruka Holdings Ltd. and would later be carved out to form a separate business. Kapruka will invest a sizable portion of the IPO proceeds towards the latest initiative, commencing from 2022.

Founder and Chairman Dulith Herath said: “We are excited to announce our upcoming used goods marketplace, ‘Soldout.lk’, which we hope will transform the second-hand sales in Sri Lanka. The idea of this initiative is to explore why consumers should pay a premium price for something new when anyone could get almost the same just as functional and beautiful. Maybe it’s not directly out of a box, or maybe it’s barely been used, but anyone could get it at an affordable price.”

“Also, there is a sustainability aspect to it where we encourage people to re-use, which is good for our planet, while enabling customers to easily fulfil their needs. The platform is part of our long-term investment plan further to the IPO, with the central goal of providing a pathway to easier purchases, and a greater sense of affordability for customers, thereby elevating our ability to create economic value for all stakeholders.

“Soldout.lk, which will draw inspiration from online trade giant Craigslist, has the potential to transform the online resale market in Sri Lanka, and is something we look forward to greatly,” Herath added.

Having launched in 2002 as a start-up by Herath, with a capital of less than $ 1,000, Kapruka has transformed into the largest locally owned e-commerce company in Sri Lanka. It is now a multi-billion-rupee enterprise, without any external investors, using a non-marketplace e-commerce model with fully integrated delivery, serving a wide variety of both local and expatriate Sri Lankan clientele. The company has since been benchmarked and recognised by global giants such as Amazon.com, IKEA, eBay etc.

Being a local e-com ‘master-seller’ in Sri Lanka, Kapruka has also enabled an abundance of aspiring local producers and sellers on the site. Kapruka stocks over 135,000 products, has partnerships with over 500 renowned brands and serves over 1.1 million expat clients.

Kapruka to play a dominant role in B2B e-commerce marketplace

KAPRUKA Holdings Ltd., the pioneering e-commerce platform that has evolved into Sri Lanka’s largest locally owned e-com plat-form, yesterday announced plans for the launch of Kapruka B2B; a dedicated B2B platform for bulk purchases.

The platform, which combines the convenience, value, and reliability of Kapruka’s high quality order fulfillment with other value-added features, is aimed at helping businesses streamline their purchasing operations. Kapruka B2B is one of the several new initiatives the company wishes to fund through its upcoming IPO.

Discussing plans for the launch of Kapruka B2B, Founder and CEO Dulith Herath said: “The demand for B2B ecommerce solutions is growing exponentially, world-wide, and this trend is catching on here too. The time is now ripe for a locally grown, world-class B2B ecommerce solution. Thus, Kapruka B2B, backed by Kapruka’s expertise, reputation, and quality of order fulfillment, will help lead the way to creating a vibrant B2B ecommerce marketplace in Sri Lanka.

“Global giants like Amazon and Alibaba have led the way in this and created huge B2B marketplaces worth trillions of dollars. Our own research also indicates that many businesses in Sri Lanka, big and small, are looking to do their purchasing online. Thus, we see immense potential in this new initiative, which will be partly financed by the Rs. 505 million capital we raised through our IPO.”

Kapruka B2B will be operated by Kapruka E-commerce Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kapruka Holdings Ltd. The B2B marketplace will launch with a focus on grocery items and will later expand to include other categories of wholesale goods including fruits, vegetables and other products. The company expects to channel Rs. 55.5 million from the IPO proceeds towards the Kapruka B2B platform, with development and implementation scheduled to be completed in phases across 2023 and 2024.

Founded in 2002, Kapruka is Sri Lanka’s first and largest locally owned e-commerce enterprise. The company, through its website, facilitates online purchases of goods for its Sri Lankan and expatriate customer base.

The company has a well-integrated supply chain and sells its own-label products, predominantly, Kapruka cakes, flowers and value-added fruits and vegetables. The company partners with over 500 high-end brands and executes order fulfillment and last mile delivery for its online orders. Kapruka strives to provide a non-marketplace model and a superior online shopping experience to consumers.
