Last month a poll conducted by The Age newspaper saw 81% of the 3527 voters saying that Australia should not tour Sri Lanka after Britain’s Channel 4 documentary on alleged war crimes was aired in Australia.
Apparently certain Australian officials and players were uneasy about the tour. However, the doubters have been convinced following Sangakkara’s speech that spoke on cricket’s capacity to unite communities.
Some influential cricket personalities in Australia had forwarded Sangakkara’s speech to all state associations of CA and its players to listen to what the sport means to Sri Lankans.
The Australian cricket team under Michael Clarke will be arriving in Colombo late this month to undertake their first tour of the country since 2004.
