Me and my gf invested 8000 about two months ago and I studied all the basics through that.
Now I have a two months vacation in campus (law faculty) and I want to learn everything there is to learn about the stock market in these two months so that I can safely invest my earnings when I'm working.
I've got about 20000 that I don't mind wasting and directfn tws. I can sit down in front of the computer from 9.30 to 2.30. What advise do you have for me guys?
Also I'm a charted accountancy stategic level student. So I know the theory but I want to know how to analyze the financial statements for investment purposes in the stock market.
As at the begininig I'm hoping to follow the TWS suggested 'top pick' stocks. My plan is to get in and out of them in few hours or at most in the next day.
Any suggestions or help are greatly appreciated.

currently,... and in future CSE becomes a difficult place to get any short term gains. .... best thing is to make a medium or a short term investment .....then hold and wait....

if you plan to get in and out within a few hours, studying financial reports may not help you much. because since february, fundamentally valuable shares have been going down. study technical analysis. there are videos on youtube. but please be informed that these techniques may not always work in our market because its heavilly regulated+manipulated.

Optimistic is correct on this..
Dont jump to a muddy waters without knowing whether you can get yourself cleaned by a near by tap..
Daytrading is like this.. Ur financial knowledge doesn't matter in these situations..
U have to learn to read the EOD charts, intraday candlestick patterns and most probably u'll have to start experimenting.. u may even incur losses but that will make u more stronger, and if u feel ur not up to losses u can always invest in short-med term with your financial background..

Welcome to the CSE brother. Two months will not be enough to learn everything. Dont go after rallies, as a beginner. Study a selected group of shares covering all the sectors. Keep a daily record of them, then you know the movements. Buy from bottom and sell at high. Buy shares in separate lots, dont buy all at once, if fallen you can buy more form the bottom and can avg. Be patient. keep a target per a month, like 5% return of your total investment. happy trading I love you

Thanks guys. I have a problem with TWS. It's charts doesn't seem to updare real-time. Why is that?
I want to practice both short term and long term investment so I want to master both technical and fundamental analatical skills.
@ smallville- You are correct. I don't mind taking risk and incurring losses at this stage. I mean, how many times do we fall down before finally standing up and start walking. I still have the bruises on my knees I got while I was learning to ride a bicycle. I fell on the same knee over and over again.
Rest assured, I want quit. I just want your help. I can learn technical analysis myself. But I want you to tell me how to analyse the financial statements.

Thanks for all. You were all helpful but I need specific instructions on financial stament analysiz please.

Welcome to CSE and Wish you good luck.

Don't be discouraged by the fact that markets is in a down trend. Periods of downtrends are the defining moments of rich from poor, if you play your cards well during this period you will come very strong by the end of it. Since you have not lost any money in the market you are entering at a very favorable period.

@Windi5- I know two months is not enough but that's all I've got. So I'm going to take risks and try to learn as much as possible. I really don't care about the 20,000 I have invested. I consider that as 'tution fees' that I have already paid. What I want now is to learn.

Something on financial statements please guys..

Thanks for the encouragement tiger. I'm not discouraged at all. Infact I consider this as the best time to enter the market. I figured that if you could identify and avoid downfalls like this (which is inevitable in any complex system) you could do extremely well in the long run. What are your thoughts on that guys

As you go along you will feel that even the millions that you would invest are just like this tuition fees, there is no difference. Therefore please get rid of this mentality of loosing money to learn, just determined to earn earn and earn. Don't enter to a position unless you are 100% sure that you know fully that you have done your home work.

Thanks tiger. Yes I'll try my best but since I'm a complete novice I don't even know whether I have done the homework or not. Could you tell me the basic things to look at before entering. I know a exhaustive list is not possible but at least a brief detail would be helpful.

In theory there are loads of concepts such as DCF, Behavioral finance, PE, EPS, RSI, EMA, MA, MACD etc... that you can find if you google them. This is public knowledge which is quite easy to find.

In your case select few companies which are familiar to you, the business that you can understand, where you can find lot of information about, then read wildly. A good starting point is CEO/Directors review that you find in FS. Go though announcements published in CSE. Stay tuned with sites such as this for gossips and rumors Wink . Look at trading patterns, collection patterns etc... you will be able to identify candidates for trading and candidates for investing.

You need to have a lot of knowlege and insider info to do trading and it carries a lot of risk.. You dont have to sit infront of the computer and wait if you invest rather than end up getting ur fingures burnt by doing trading. Good luck

Good. It is the correct way to learn. Try to value a share before buying.

At the moment indicators are favorable in CSE. Due to fallen markets in the world we may see a temporary selling pressure. If the world markets start to fall sharply again it may reflect here also.

If you are near Colombo try to attend the following free seminar. Next is on 12th. Remember they end it at 8.40 p.m. at Hyde park Arpico , check your transportation. No buses in some routes.
