there is some comment on LBO
3. Tripod Aug 09
@Fund: Precisely my point. A month ago they were confident when acquiring the share at Rs.15, even though the company fundamentals have not changed for the negative they are willing to sell off at a loss given the fear of the possible reaction of the other market participants.

A knee-jerk reaction is the order of the day at the CSE. Ideally it should not be the case. @Fund, I agree with your point.

It could be people who got higher-than-expected allocations selling fearing further losses like other recent IPOs and wanting to cut loss.

That does not necessarily mean the price won't hold.

Another one bites the dust! An eventful year it has been with IPO’s closing at less than the issue price on the opening day. Fingers have been pointed all over and who’s to be blamed? Take the case of TJL where ‘differential pricing’ was not evident in the Private Placement and the IPO. But what was to come of it?

A marked decline in the share price during the first few hours of trading. The Private Placement investors had absolutely no incentive to sell their shares at less than Rs. 15, as they too acquired the shares at the same price as the public. Who’s behind this sell down? You and I that’s who.

The retailers are selling off at losses. A few calls to a couple of broker friends will confirm this fact. You should try it too. The SEC of course is getting a beating each time an IPO or the market declines by 2%. When the market was running and people were making more dough than a bakery none of these ‘investors’ commended the SEC or even acknowledged them.

It is true that most of these retailer would have borrowed heavily to pay for these IPO’s, however, did TJL deserve to trade below Rs. 15 as witnessed today? I don’t think so. If the retailers and other investors were confident at Rs.15 a month back, what caused the decline? Ignorance, immaturity and greed. While scouring through LBO or other similar blogs the comments made by some investors on the CSE calls for two large horns to be placed on their heads.

An investor had suggested that ‘Off the market transactions aka crossings’ are illegal and they should be curbed by the SEC. Clearly the definition of a ‘Crossing’ is unknown to this investor. Statements of ignorance such as this are rampant on business blogs (in Sri Lanka). The buying and selling of shares is at times based on the absolute price of the share with no reference to its intrinsic value derived via various valuation methodologies.

A veteran stock broker once stated in my very presence, that a well known hospital that is listed on the CSE comprises of nine floors and that people should be willing to pay Rs. 1 per floor thus arriving at a share price of Rs. 9. Yes dear investor, that’s how they roll! At the end of the day whatever said and done it is he (the stockbroker) who pulls the trigger. It fair to assume that the stock broker has some form of influence on the client he his handling and that he is in a capacity to properly advice the client thus the reason behind their designation of ‘investment advisor’.

The extent of influence doesn’t hold true if the investor is a High Net-worth Individual or is an investor with sound financial knowledge though.

Most of our investors are ignorant, with the sheer intent of making a killing. The stock market is an ‘investment’ vehicle. An acquisition of a share should be an investment, not a game of Russian roulette. Exposure to speculative stocks is acceptable provided that your risk appetite allows for it.

This clearly shows that investers have lost their faith on stock market. It is very easy to destroy something but rebuilding is really difficult.Even though SEC is going to relieve the rules it will take time to get the investers confidence on stock market.
