VPEL could be another great penny stock.. I saw in their annual report how the share has performed over the year.. In the financial year 2006/07, the price of the share was 1.80 and next year 2.50 or something like that... After 4 and a half years, it is trading at 10..
Therefore, quite contrary to what rajithasamaranayaka said, penny stocks too can perform well over the years and it is a good long term investment providedthat you pick the right stock..
We talk about an average of 20% gain for your investment in 1 year.. But taking VPEL for example, it has more than doubled every year.. This might not contnue but I guess penny stocks are not a bad investment..

Hmm, Interesting comment . Food for thought.

Well if one gets in early to identified growth potential Penny stock you can bag in multiple times its value in the long term. Remember that a company has to start somewhere. So being in the penny section does not mean it is bad. The key is to identify them correctly from a bunch which maybe have duds for long term.

I totally agree with slstock on this. Penny stocks are not bad stocks. They are just companies with a lot of shares. That's why they have a low price for a single share. There are many companies with higher prices but with lower performances. Do you think that all the stocks with a price over Rs. 1000 are the best performing companies in Sri Lanka today? No way...

Just look at each company in the same view point irrespective of the price. Just look whether the stock is undervalued or overvalued. A penny stock can be overvalued and a stock more than Rs. 3000 can still be undervalued. The only thing about penny stocks is that when they start moving, they move fast. Since a rise in just Rs. 3 may mean a 100% rise for them. So it is never a bad thought to invest on them.

Do your own research and make your own decisions...

What Does Penny Stock Mean?

A stock that trades at a relatively low price and market capitalization, usually outside of the major market exchanges. These types of stocks are generally considered to be highly speculative and high risk because of their lack of liquidity, large bid-ask spreads, small capitalization and limited following and disclosure. They will often trade over the counter through the OTCBB and pink sheets.

Investopedia explains Penny Stock
The term itself is a misnomer because there is no generally accepted definition of a penny stock. Some consider it to be any stock that trades for pennies or those that trade for under $5, while others consider any stock trading off of the major market exchanges as a penny stock. However, confusion can occur as there are some very large companies, based on market capitalization, that trade below $5 per share, while there are many very small companies that trade for $5 or more.

The typical penny stock is a very small company with highly illiquid and speculative shares. The company will also generally be subject to limited listing requirements along with fewer filing and regulatory standards.

Based on above definitions it is clear we cannot classify DIAL, UBC, NHL as penny stocks. They are large well established companies..some are market leaders of large industries within which they operate..Even VPEL I don't consider as a penny because they are part of a well established group. REEF was a penny stock until its price was manipulated up..still I consider as a penny considering the very small nature of its organisation. There are a few other examples like GREG, DPL, TAFL which I consider as pennies even though their prices were artificially moved up..and holding on to those prices with the greatest difficulty now

Sometimes when u buy these stocks in large quantities, say over 100K shares and keep it as forgotten, it may give u a good return in a long run.. I mean when you look at a time period more than 1yr.. At least these shares will be moved by a rupee.. so 100K investment means u get 100K profit outta it Wink

On the other hand, there are market rallies time to time.. group rallies, sector rallies, sister effect to be seen time to time.. Then if u buy at the lowest levels in med term also u get some value on it..

Well you rather hold more worthwhile companies like VONE, SHL, COMB, SAMP, etc

I know you will get less volume of shares for your money but the value will be the same and better chance of stability.

Under 10 i can only see RICH.

Maybe just look in the next room (between 10 and 20/- price range) and you can see PLC, JINS, SHL, and on an odd day LAUGF, AEL, VONE and PABC below 20/- if you are lucky. These are growing companies. This group already gives a decent dividen as well and look more promising.
You get decent diversification as well

PLC - Finance
JINS - Insuarance
SHL- Diversified
LGL- Power/energy/Diversified
PABC- Bank
AEL - Construction
VONE - Diversified
RICH - Plantation/Manufacturing/Diverisifed

This is only a portfolio example and NOT a buy recommendation for anyone. Do your own research before jumping into the pot.

Cheers!

Suggestion, If you are looking at buying and forgeting for the next 10 years, please look at a business which could survive for that period and give an increase in earnings year on year. If the business has lasted for the last 10 years it would be great. Penny may not fit this but you will be safer.
