sector - PLANTATION SECTOR Planta10

With a land area of more than 65,000 sq km, Sri Lanka’s agriculture sector is characterised by small-scale farming and a tropical climate that is highly variable. Agricultural output comprises rice, fruit, vegetables and livestock primarily for domestic consumption, and export-focused products such as tea, rubber and coconuts. Around 55% of land is used for agriculture. Traditionally the backbone of the economy, agriculture’s share of GDP has steadily declined over the decades, from 30.4% in 1975 to around 8% in 2015. While Sri Lanka is moving towards an urbanised manufacturing and services economy, the rural agriculture, forestry and fisheries industries are the source of income for more than 2.1m Sri Lankans, the 2016 Labour Force Survey reported. s.

This is what I have been telling for like a month now. This is still just the beginning and we can see another few really huge rally when reports of rubber and oil palm crop plantations hit the market. Atm Plantations stocks still are way too undervalued and should have a better run one day than even the poultry sector. (considering the future growth+ risk factor looks better for plantation at the moment with rubber + palm oil crops).
I just posted few days ago( like 3 days) telling to have a look at MAL.X in short term by end of this month. It went to 3 page discussion where so many reputed people arguing about it. Now it has gone from rs 61 to rs 73 in just 2-3days. HOPL is still hugely under valued for its last financial figures and so will most plantation after there reports come up. GL ALL (Specially to who was insightful enough to invest in the plantation sector. king)

I think many plantations have cyclical behavior as expected.plantation shares do not go straight up or down.because many outside risk factors are with plantations.even very good plantation company might suffer from international prices, weather conditions, political situation etc.. .
That is a one reason for many undervalued counters in plantation sector.
This plantation rally is due to high rubber prices.but tea plantations are not reported good profits.
I think rubber prices will be remained high for few more quarters so rubber plantations(KGAL,KOTA,RICH,AGAL etc) are very attractive in these days..
Also many plantations are illiquid so sudden rapid increase of price is not uncommon in plantation sector.

Plantation companies have already gone up expecting good news. In other words, the coming results are reflected in the current prices.

major investment bank and key oil market analyst, Goldman Sachs perdicted oil prices to sour in the coming months. Some analyst predicts it to reach USD 150 before end of the year.

Strengthening crude prices could increase the price of synthetic rubber and thus natural rubber too. On top of continued , horrible whether in the region, natural suspply distruptions, growing demand could incerse the price of rubber. This situation could be there at least for 2011.

The period may be good for natural rubber producers. However, prices have shot up and may require careful analysis of individual stocks before purchase desision. At the end, its your money , you bear the profit or loss

Econ I never talked about Tea and specifically told what to look for. Anyway I can't do all the research for you guys and nor have time to type a huge analysis for pages to justify it. Just do you own and if don't want to stay away from the plantation stocks. I'm just here to give a brief idea and I already told why in my previous topic with data. I'll Just write few times in coming months saying how much these specific plantation stocks have climbed.

This rally may even be dead before it started. The banks started moving in the last hour. If the financial sector runs it'll eat up the plantation rally. But plantations are good. there are definitely nice one's out there.

Richard Pieris & Company, a group which has plantations firms, apart from retail and rubber manufacturing, was the most actively traded stock, with over 21 million shares done, and the share closing at 13.90 rupees, up 90 cents.

Madulsima Plantations, a tea growing firm that is part of the Stassen group, was the highest gainer, closing at 28.50, up 8.10 rupees, while Agalawatte Plantations, which grows rubber and palm oil, closed at 110.90, up 21.40.

Kotagala Plantations, which grows rubber and tea, closed at 209.50, up 31.20

High prices for tea, rubber and palm oil have drawn investors to plantations firms, brokers said.

we should look for plantations with rubber and palm oil.

It is common knowledge that plantation sector turnover/profitability is cyclical. This is as a result of drought the Sri Lankan agriculture crops faces once in every 5 years. Commodity prices have escalated due to high demand and lower production backed by high crude oil prices have helped some of the plantation companies to make significant profits this year. After a good year of income sustainability would usually becomes a daunting task.

Question Question Question

Many companies had - EPSs due to wage issue. Few companies might have shown positive eps ( tricky) due to not reporting the gratuity and some wage backpay.

One group of companies reported + eps even after taking care of gratuity and wage hike. Can you guess? KGAL and NAMU. ( ofcourse RICH reduced management charges as courtesy) but they reported + Eps.

If interested in plantations best is to look at the facts I mentioned and identify the share which has the strongest potential to recover. ( I am talking medium term investment).

If for short term, it is different story as any of the beaten down share from time to time can have small upward movements.

Dr. Sena Yaddehige is a very competent person who drive the arpico group to this extend. this business will not bankrupt due to low performance of group. business is an art. the chairman know the art.
with future palm oil business as well as from their other operational activities they may shine future. good stock to keep eye on in long term. now it is trading at attractive price.
this is just my personal view only. don't use this to make any buy/sell/hold activities.
