The Jetwing Group, one of the country’s biggest resort hotel and travel operators now investing big bucks in upgrading its old hotels to sparkling five-star standards, plans to raise Rs. 5 billion equity capital by a private placement to be followed by an IPO.

``The private placement will be concluded this year,’’ Jetwing Chairman Hiran Cooray said in an interview last week. ``The IPO will follow. We’re already getting inquiries about the private placement.’’

Tourist arrivals expected to hit 400,000 mark mid-April

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) has stated that it expects a total of 400,000 tourists to have arrived for 2023 by 20 April.

SLTDA Chairman Priyantha Fernando explained that as of 16 April, 55,000 tourists were seen entering the island for the month of April alone.

“Thus, we are hopeful that we will achieve the target of 400,000 tourists by the 20th of this month”, he said in this regard, adding that most of the tourists who arrived since January were of Russian and Indian nationalities.

He further said that although high numbers of Chinese tourists were expected this month, this was not the case, and therefore they are expecting more Chinese tourists next month.

Sri Lanka’s hotel business has bounced back by 50-60% with the gradual increase in tourist arrivals following the Pandemic and hotels are now able to cover at least the cost, said Director of Marketing and Development at Jetwing Hotels, Harshana Cooray.

Speaking to The Economic Times, he said that the hotel industry in Sri Lanka expects its business to improve further as about 125,000 tourists have visited the country on average in the first quarter (1Q) of 2023.

Sri Lanka is expecting 2 million tourist arrivals in 2023 and within that the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) expects over 400,000 tourist arrivals in the first four months of 2023. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) data showed that tourism earnings have surpassed $ 1.4 billion in the first quarter of 2023, an 80% increase from the corresponding period of the last year.

Tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka crossed the 600,000 mark this week, data from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority showed.
Sri Lanka had welcomed 79,900 tourists as of June 25, bringing the cumulative arrivals for the January 01 to June 25 period to 604,386.
The top three source markets for the year so far have been India, the Russian Federation and United Kingdom

ECONOMYNEXT _Hotels are the big beneficiaries of the tariff revision seeing their bills fall 26.3 percent to an average of 37.59 rupee a unit down from 50.97 rupees a unit earlier, according to calculation by the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka.

How can someone who runs a hostel, guest house, or homestay by selling the rooms at $30 rate? If the five stars sell their property at the same rate. Each person will receive a payment based on the quality of their goods with the minimal hotel prices. We need to attract the wealthy Indians to visit and spend money.The minimum rate is merely a minimum rate; it is not a maximum rate, so that is the notion. In order to keep it open, they must be able to sell at that price. That won't lead the entire nation to collapse.”

Kicking off the second quarter earnings season, Tal Lanka Hotels PLC, the owners and operators of Taj Colombo reported higher top and bottomline performance for the three months ended June 30, 2023.
Providing a glimpse to how Colombo city hotels fared in the last three months, Tal Lanka Hotels reported revenue of Rs.805.7 million for the April – June period, more than doubling the Rs.325.2 million reported for the same period last year, which was gripped by economic and social instability.

The tourist arrival numbers have so far been promising and offer hope for continued recovery, after a disastrous stretch marked by Easter attacks and the pandemic, boding favourably to the hospitality sector in the country.
Tal Lanka Hotels’ stock gained 70 cents or 4.07 percent on Friday to settle at Rs.17.90 a share.
The company reported a net profit of Rs.57.4 million or 41 cents a share for the three months under review compared to a loss of Rs.1,009.3 million or Rs.7.23 a share in the year earlier period reflecting the tough operating environment.
