A significant decline in profits of the banking sector was observed during the 9 month period concerned. The banking sector reported a Profit After Tax (PAT) of Rs. 90.2 billion during the nine months ending September 2022, which is a reduction of Rs. 41.5 billion and recorded a contraction of 31.5 per cent compared to the PAT reported during the nine months ending September 2021. During the period under consideration, aggregate profits of state owned banks, domestic private banks, and foreign banks declined compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

The contraction in profits of the banking sector was mainly driven by the significant increase in new impairment charges during the period. Impairment charges increased by Rs. 272.5 billion during the nine months ending September 2022 compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. However, increased income on fees and commissions and foreign exchange gains on trading activities positively contributed to the profits of the banking sector during the nine months ending September 2022.
