Turnover looked up but the indices on the Colombo bourse were down yesterday for the fourth day running with the ASPI declining 11.93 points (0.17%) while S&P SL20 lost 8.39 points on a turnover of Rs. 835.68 million, up from the previous day’s Rs. 363.6 million, with 91 gainers behind 96 losers with 138 counters closing flat.

"Sampath was the most traded counter with a crossing 100,000 shares in a deal worth Rs. 25.5 million. The counter also topped the floor trades with nearly 0.7 million shares done," a broker said. "It’s hard to say which way the market will move but the key word is political stability."

Foreigners were net sellers with an outflow of Rs. 69.38 million with sales of Rs. 208.91 million ahead of purchases of Rs. 139.53 million.

Laugfs Gas, both voting and non-voting, JKH closing 50 cents up at Rs. 191, NDB, CTC and Access were the biggest turnover generators with Laugfs and Access posting price gains while NDB and CTC were down. There was a single crossing of 166,190 JKH at Rs. 190 contributing Rs. 31.6 million to turnover.

"The ASPI ended lower for a fourth consecutive day amid improved turnover levels," John Keells Stock Brokers reported. "The market saw heavy trading in SAMP which accounted for roughly 24% of the day’s turnover including a crossing."

Banks, Finance & Insurance was the most actively traded sector (-0.36%), it noted.

Sampath traded between Rs. 253.20 and Rs. 256.30 on the floor with nearly 0.7 million shares done closing Rs. 1.80 down at Rs. 255. Both the voting and non-voting Laugfs shares showed volume and price gain with the voting share closing a rupee up at Rs. 39.90 on nearly 1.4 million transacted while the non-voting share closed Rs. 1.20 up at Rs. 35.70 on nearly 1.5 million shares.

JKH was done between Rs. 190.10 and Rs. 192.90 on the floor, closing 50 cents up at at Rs. 191 generating a turnover of Rs. 48.8 million. NDB was down Rs. 5.10 to Rs. 260 with over 168,000 shares done between Rs. 260 and Rs. 266 (Rs. 43.8 million) while CTC closed Rs. 4.10 down Rs. 919.90 on 43,862 shares done between Rs. 919.90 and Rs. 949.90 (Rs. 40.4 million).

Access was up Rs. 1.60 to Rs. 23.20 on over 1.5 million shares, Overseas Realty up 90 cents to Rs. 24.90 on over 1.1 million shares and Chevron down Rs. 11 to Rs. 365 on 64,536 shares.

York Arcade Holdings announced a first and final dividend of 20 cents a share for 2014/15 while Commercial Credit announced a final dividend of one rupee a share for 2014/15.
