In addition to winning the Best Corporate Citizen Award, the company also bagged the category awards for both Employee Relations and Customer and Supplier Relations, as well as a merit certificate for Dairy Development in the previously conflict ridden North and East provinces.
Speaking on the company’s latest laurel, Nestlé Lanka PLC Managing Director Alois Hofbauer explained the Nestlé philosophy of “Creating Shared Value” (CSV) as a new approach to the role of business in society that Nestlé has been pioneering.
In colloquial thinking, “Creating Shared Value” reflects joint benefit for both shareholders and society and epitomises Nestlé’s desire to create prosperity and help improve the quality of life for people in an inclusive manner. “Creating Shared Value” is the way Nestlé runs its business. We have analysed our value chain and determined that the areas of greatest potential for joint value optimization with Sri Lankan society and Nestlé are water, rural development, and nutrition. These activities are core to our business strategy and vital to people’s welfare.
For Nestlé, CSV has become an integral part of our everyday business operations. We believe that it is not enough to feed a man for a day, but that it is far more practical and beneficial to empower communities to be able to generate their own income in a sustainable and independent manner. By providing communities with the means and education to develop their own livelihoods, we make it possible for them to not only enhance the quality of their lives, but also those of future generations to come. We are truly moved and honoured to have received this award by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce as it is a reflection of our success to uplift the communities we touch in a sustainable manner,” says Hofbauer.
Culture of collaborative, sustainable relationships
Among the many notable attributes that won Nestlé Lanka the label of “Best Corporate Citizen,” the company’s success with forming long standing and collaborative relations with their stakeholders stood out.
Through Nestlé’s strong stakeholder network, the Company provides the opportunities and means for communities to grow. The sustainability provided through long-term procurement, agro-education and technology transfer ensures that farmers not only have the capacity to deliver products of international standards but also the financial stability to ensure consistent growth.
Being one of the first companies of its size to source milk locally, Nestlé was also the first to introduce milk chilling and milk collection centres in Sri Lanka’s North and East (NE). Throughout the conflict period, Nestlé continued milk collection operations in the NE and was once again one of the first companies to reinvest in these areas after the conflict ceased- contributing to the stabilization of day to day life for many dairy farmers in the area.
The company’s latest investment plan of LKR 10 billion is also geared to ensure that growth ripples across the entire company and all of its stakeholders. The planned investment in production expansion and dairy development reflects the company’s commitment to empower rural communities through local sourcing of raw materials.
Furthermore, with innovation and renovation a constant focus of the business, Nestlé believes that all improvements and enhancements need to happen across the board and not just be limited to internal operations. Having consistently maintained and enhanced one of the highest quality standards in the world, Nestlé has pushed all suppliers to enhance their standards as well.
“Through educating and training our suppliers to develop expertise worthy of world class standards, Nestlé has made it possible for suppliers to ensure year-on-year growth on par with the Company’s year-on year-growth-enabling mutual, sustainable relationships. This is what ‘Creating Shared Value’ is all about,” points out Hofbauer.
While CSV impacts their external stakeholders, it has an even larger impact on Nestlé’s own staff. “We have pioneered many initiatives to ensure that each employee achieves an optimal work life balance with no room for intolerance, harassment or discrimination of any kind,” says Hofbauer “Notable mentions in this regard are the implementation of paternity and adoption leave for employees as well as key initiatives like ‘Project Harmony’.”

“Project Harmony” seeks to encourage ‘Strength through Diversity’ within the organization by creating an environment where women are motivated to work and are empowered to develop, progress and fulfil their potential. The main objective of “Project Harmony” is thus to guarantee that Nestlé provides the environment and culture to facilitate a balanced gender mix.”Nestlé has built its success and culture on a strong multicultural diversity. Diversity is key to our future success and leveraging it further gives us a critical and sustainable competitive advantage,” says Hofbauer. He noted that 25% of the Nestlé Lanka Management Committee were females-– a testament to the fact that Nestlé is indeed “walking the talk” when it comes to ”Creating Shared Value” for everyone.
Environmental Sustainability at the Core of its Operations
Among the larger scale initiatives undertaken by Nestlé Lanka, none can compete with the company’s efforts toward environmental conservation-a factor that was recognized at the National Green Awards organized by the Central Environmental Authority. With efforts ranging from the reduction of greenhouse gases to internal audits that aim to ensure that each staff member does his or her bit to minimize the Company’s carbon footprint, Nestlé has managed to reduce its water consumption by 5% and its energy consumption by 3% yearly-no mean feat considering that this happens simultaneously with their year-on-year increases in production.
Continued commitment
Nestlé first brought its promise of “Good Food. Good Life” to Sri Lanka over a century ago. The Company has long since proven itself as a true Sri Lankan company with the development of Sri Lanka close to its heart. The range of awards received by the “local multinational”-as it is popularly known – stands as a testament to that. Having won high ranking awards at each major corporate award ceremony this year, Nestlé Lanka has once again proven that at its core, it is “Creating Shared Value” for each of its stakeholders.
