Mar 01, 2012 (LBO) - Sri Lankan shares closed firmer Thursday with big deals in Hayleys and LB Finance pushing up turnover, brokers said.

The main All Share Price Index closed up 0.21 percent (11.59 points) at 5,469.68, while the more liquid Milanka index rose 0.26 percent (12.13 points) to close at 4,763.19.

Turnover was 2.6 billion rupees, according to stock exchange provisional figures.

Lanka Securities said LB Finance Plc and Hayleys Plc made the strongest contribution to the daily turnover with each stock crossing the billion rupee mark.

They said 2.8 million Hayleys changed hands as crossings or off-market private deals at 380 rupees a share.

Hayleys closed at 379.90 rupees, up 19.90 rupees with a total of over 2.7 million shares traded.

LB Finance closed at 140.20 rupees, up 2.20 rupees with just over a million shares done after hitting a high of 150.

Index heavyweight John Keells Holdings closed at 177.90 rupees, up 2.40.

Lanka Securities said foreign participation stood at 5.3 percent of the total market activity and foreign investors were the net sellers with a net foreign outflow of 159.6 million rupees.

Sri Lankan shares closed in volatile trading but with positive momentum Thursday amidst big deals in Hayleys and LB Finance pushing up turnover, analysts said.

The Colombo Bourse opened the day with the positive momentum and continued to be volatile during the trading day yet pervading in the green territory. The main All Share Price index (ASPI) gained 11.59 points and closed the day at 5,469.68; the more liquid Milanka Price Index (MPI) gained 12.13 points to close at 4,763.19.

241 counters traded during the day to record a turnover of Rs. 2.6Bn; out of which Rs. 2.13Bn was generated through privately negotiated deals took place with DIST.N (Rs. 187Mn), NEST.N (Rs. 23.00Mn) , LFIN.N (Rs. 886.9Mn) and HAYL.N (Rs. 1.03Bn). Hayleys PLC (Rs. 1.18Bn), LB Finance PLC (Rs. 1.0Bn) and Distilleries Company (Rs. 313Mn) were the major contributors to the daily turnover.

The day recorded 5,503 trades which resulted in 27.3Mn shares changing hands. LB Finance PLC (6.9Mn), Hayleys PLC (3.1Mn) and Distilleries Company (2.3Mn) were the top contributors to the total daily volume. The price losers outnumbered the price gainers by 122:90. The price gainers were led by Beruwela Walkinn (Price gain of 33.3%) on the contrary, Tea Smallholder (Price loss of 30.00%) led the price losers. The market recorded a net foreign outflow of Rs. 159.6Mn.(Bandula)
