Rupee will stabilise at 120 to a dollar: PB

Treasury Secretary P.B. Jayasundara yesterday assured that the
government would intervene should the rupee go out of control and said
he was confident it would soon stabilize in the region of Rs.120 to the
dollar. He said the objectives of a floating rupee were the government’s
desire to allow market forces to determine the exchange rate and thus
boost exports and to reduce the trade deficit to manageable

levels. “The economic fundamentals followed by the government have paid
dividends and the foreign reserves have topped the US$7 billion mark.
Rejecting speculation that the rupee will depreciate to 150 to the
dollar, he said the rupee would stabilize below Rs.120 to the dollar
when the market and fiscal policy measures taken by the government takes
root,” Dr. Jayasundara said.

The increasing cost of fuel, global economic slowdown and the increasing
cost of imports have negatively affected the economy and the government
has pumped in US$600 million to the money market to keep the rupee
stable but it did not work. That was why the government decided to float
the rupee in February,” he said.

Dr. Jayasundara said the price increase on electricity, transport and
fuel and tax increase on vehicle imports were the measures taken by the
Treasury to stabilise the exchange rate and control the trade deficit.

“The situation is not exclusive to Sri Lanka. Almost all the
countries including the US economy has shown slow progress due to global
economic shocks. What is more important is that Sri Lanka has never
failed to honour its repayments and has won the confidence of
international financial institutions and donors.

Responding to a journalist on the rationale of increasing duty
free vehicle permit of politicians from US$35,000 to US$50,000 while
imposing a huge increase in taxes on vehicle imports, Dr. Jayasundara
said it was only a matter of few hundred vehicle permits and it would
not adversely affect the economy.

By increasing the tax ratio on vehicle imports, the Treasury
expects to save a minimum of US$700 million this year from an import
bill of US$1700 million last year.

Responding to another question Dr. Jayasundara said the best
achievement of the government was to win the confidence of investors and
on a government to government level. Investors not only from China,
Japan or India but even EU countries, Korea, US, Australia, Austria have
made inquiries on investment opportunities and many of them have
entered into agreements on infrastructure development, agriculture,
tourism and IT development.

මේ වන විටත් රජය ආර්ථික ප්‍රතිපත්ති ක්‍රියාත්මක කිරීමේ දී විනිමය අනුපාතය ස්ථාවර කරගැනීමට අවශ්‍ය සියලුම ක්‍රියාමාර්ග ගෙන ඇතැයිද අද තොළඹ පැවති මාධ්‍ය හමුවකදී ඒ මහතා කියා සිටියේය.

කෙසේ වෙතත් ඩොලරයේ අගය අසාමාන්‍ය ලෙස තවදුරටත් ඉහළ ගියහොත් එය පාලනය සදහා ඉදිරියේදී රජය මැදිහත්වන බවද ඒ මහතා පැවසීය.

අද දිනයේදී විවෘත වෙළඳපලේ ඇමරිකානු ඩොලරයක් අලෙවි වූයේ රුපියල් 131.77ක මුදලකටය.
