Price of a 12.5 Kg domestic LP gas cylinder, both Litro and Laugfs, will be increased by Rs. 350 with affect from midnight today (04), the Consumer Affairs Authority said.

Laugfs Gas Ltd had previously sought permission from the CAA to increase the price of a gas cylinder by Rs 350.

A minimum hike of Rs. 350 is needed as international gas prices have increase greatly and also due to the depreciation of the Rupee, Laugfs Group Chairman WKH Wegapitiya had said in March.

The last revision was in August when the CAA approved a Rs.156 price increase on a domestic gas cylinder.

What can the innocent people do? Does the government listen to people's voice? Not even to the religious leaders. They will be labeled as conspirators.

Thanks to the money and canvasing of of Kuddas, Illegal business operators, Thieves (who eat into public money), Treasure hunters, Rapists ......, they will win all the elections.

If anybody try to agitate, that person will be made to taste the bullet or the white van will follow.

Not a surprise..this is as expected after May day.
Government is drumming that increase of milk food prices would help to promote local milk productions. Well, it will be fine if there is a strategic plan ( long term vision) to justify this point. The huge increase of gas price cannot be explained & unexpected.
Very soon inflation will touch the double digit that hits major segment of population. I feel that if actions are taken to prune the cost of corruptions & inefficiencies in public sector by 50% that value is sufficient to cover all the price increases.
Imminent hike on interest rates & fuel will further contain the business development that hit the bottom line of all companies. This will raise a big question mark on outlook of equity market. Please note that this is not a politically biased statement.

We shoudn't be hurry to say so. Cement and Gas prices are determined by the world market. Govt. can do very little on that. Milk powder is also same. Further govt. needs to protect local milk producer creating an environment to maintain a good price level for fresh milk. Ultimately when the farmer is well paid for their milk they will be good consumers/buyers for many products. That would enhance the business and improve the profitability of companies. So finaly this would be a win win situation.

No freind . we have to be reasonable. Gas price has gone up in the world market and Laugh and Litro Gas have made repeated requests to increase the price by around 900/-. But govt has allowed only 350/-

Whole-milk powder prices tumbled to their lowest level since 2009 on concern purchases from China, the world’s biggest buyer, may decline as favorable weather boosts global supply.

Powder for June delivery slumped 14 percent to $2,766 a metric ton, the lowest level since Aug. 4, 2009, according to the weighted-average price from Fonterra Cooperative Group Ltd., the world’s largest dairy exporter.

The drop, the ninth consecutive decline, was the most since August 2010, it said.

“There’s still ample supply out of New Zealand and there’s talk that Chinese buyers are out of the market,” said Michael Harvey, an analyst at Rabobank International.

“They’ve filled the quota from New Zealand quite quickly and have built up a short-term stockpile. There’s an expectation that they’ll be out of the market for a couple of months.”

Whole-milk powder plunged 22 percent this year as record prices in 2011 and good weather in most regions spurred production.

The New Zealand-China Free Trade Agreement allows the export of some New Zealand dairy products under preferential tariff rates to a certain level. Prices may continue to soften this quarter on surging global supplies, Fonterra Chief Executive Officer Theo Spierings said March 29.

China’s whole-milk powder imports climbed 45 percent in February and purchases of skim-milk powder were more than double the same level a year earlier, according to NZX Agrifax.

Milk output in the U.S., the largest producer, will rise 1.8 percent to a record 199.7 billion pounds (90.6 million tons) in 2012, the Department of Agriculture estimates. Fonterra’s milk collections this season are up 10 percent from the same period in 2011, the company said last month.

“There’s a lot of milk around short-term and it will have to flush through the system but at the end of the year, we think the market should have stabilized and possibly even see some kind of recovery,” Harvey said from Melbourne today. “Demand is pretty healthy in markets like the Middle East and Southeast Asia, so that’s going to support prices.”

Auckland-based Fonterra said yesterday it will invest in a blending and packing plant in Indonesia to meet a forecast 50 percent surge in dairy demand in the next eight years. The company will spend NZ$100 million ($82 million) on two more dairy farms in China to meet rising demand, it said April 12.

Whole-milk powder reached a record $4,958 a ton in March last year, buoyed by demand from Asia and supply concerns in New Zealand.

Milk futures traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange have slumped 14 percent this year after climbing 31 percent in 2011. That compares with a 5.4 percent gain in the Standard & Poor’s GSCI Spot Index this year.

Fonterra sells whole and skim-milk powder, dried-milk fat, cheese, and casein at its GlobalDairyTrade auctions. The company offers one-month contracts with delivery from two months after the sale, and two three-month contracts with delivery three and six months later.

1. What about buying some stock now?

Milk Powder increase is 25%. Considerable and huge.
Monthly requirement of Milk Powder for a family of 5 is about 4 KG.
If you can stock two months requirement you save about Rs.1,630/-, good saving for an average earner.
Not like Gas and Cement. Milk Powder is price marked. Old stocks are still available in outlets.

2. What about shifting to liquid milk. Price gap is negligible now. Good option for people with more than average income. Will provide better nutrients, will save foreign exchange, and will support local farmers

I like your way of thinking. cheers.
We are share dealers and we have to look at this price increase from that angle. This price change would enhance the profits of Laugh and Lanka Milk Foods. So we could expect share price increase as well.So dont you think this would help those companies to perform better. Why are you worried?
