Jul 23, 2012 (LBT) - The week opened on a very lethargic note posting a low turnover which was also supported by 2 off the market deals. Retail activity was notably less compared to the last 2 trading days showing doubt among the investor community. The benchmark index shed 6.45 points to close at 4,881 whilst the more liquid MPI shed 23.70 points to close at 4,285. Total turnover for the day was over 321mn. (Approximately USD 2.4 million) Total volume traded was 10.4K.

2 block trades were witnessed during the day which collectively pumped more than half of the day’s turnover. Market heavyweight JKH led turnover during the day as it pumped in more than 111mn towards the day’s tally. The counter witnessed 2 block trades totaling half a million shares change hands at Rs.180. The cap witnessed selling pressure during the latter half of trading and closed the day at Rs.179 shedding one rupee for the day. Banking & Finance sector cap CFIN also witnessed a block trade where 575,000 shares changed hands at Rs.135. The counter closed the day at Rs.129.30 shedding marginally.

Index heavy CARS continued witness interest from institutions and traded over 30,000 shares for the day. The cap traded its quantities between Rs.460 and Rs.462 and closed at Rs.460.90 shedding a rupee and forty cents for the day. Leisure sector cap KHL also witnessed interest from institutions whilst Illiquid cap HSIG saw almost 100,000 shares changed hands as Rs.76 and Rs.76.10.

Profit taking was evident on retail favourites as most of the caps closed the day on a negative note.LGL voting and non voting saw their shares share prices dipping sharply after it’s ex –dividend date. LGL.N closed at Rs.20.10 shedding over 8% whilst LGL.X shed a massive 18.52% to close at Rs.13.40. HVA foods witnessed heavy selling pressure to close at Rs.12.80 shedding 3.79% whilst RICH closed at Rs.6.80 gaining over 3%. Further, retail volumes were topped by FLCH,UBC and SFS whilst SEMB.X emerged as the top gainer on thin trade.

July 23, 2012 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's stocks fell 0.13 percent Monday, with large cap stocks losing ground, brokers said.

The Colombo All Share Price Index fell 6.45 points to 4,881.77 and the S&P 20 Index of large cap stocks fell 0.24 percent (06.54 points) to 2761.90.

The day's turnover of 321 million rupees was dominated by index heavy John Keells Holdings with 111 million rupees and Central Finance with 78 million rupees.

DFCC closed flat at 105.50 rupees.

Dialog Axiata PLC, the country’s largest mobile phone operator, slipped 10 cents to close at 6.00 rupees.

Aitken Spence Plc fell 20 cents to 110.30 rupees, John Keells Holdings slipped 90 cents to 179.10 down 0.50 percent and Distilleries Corporation closed flat at 122.00 rupees.

Commercial Bank fell 60 cents to close at 96.90 rupees down 0.62 percent while Hatton National Bank fell 10 cents to close at 139.90.
