Powerful businessman Asanga Seneviratne and Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority Nalaka Godahewa are the names mentioned as those strongly tipped to be appointed as the next chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)

Rumor? Or is there a source? First person suggested is something I heard first time.

Why can't they just select professionals and not businessmen?

Hmm, why not anyone of us in the forum or me? Cool Cool Am sure there are qualified and people with pratical experienced here who is sensitive to the mass also.

Come to think of it , on the other hand, not sure how many want this position even if they offer million bucks . Will get completely white hair in few months , stress less will increase , personal ethics will be challenged and ultimately will become unpopular with some faction. Oh no thanks. Over to someone who is capable, fair and willing ( will it happen?)

Both are highly connected with speculative counters.
Anyway, Dr. Nalaka's profile is very impressive.

Nation Lanka Equities (formerly - Ceylinco Stock Brokers) is under his controlled CSF through Investor Access Asia & Asanga is in the Boards of Nation Lanka Equities & Nation Lanka Finance PLC (CSF) Very Happy

I will keep my comments reserved about the above people.

Anyway, this might be a wild idea, but to find an impartial regulator who will not welter by political and HNWI influence but understands south east asian markets , maybe we ought to Try with person from outside our country( doesn't needto be westener). Am not saying these are no qualified people in Sri Lanka but due to our attachments to Sri Lanka and "other influences" it is not easy for anybody to survive this position with a good name and a fair job done for every one.

Will this ever happen. Wishful thinking only.

Who we want is a person who is very close to MR and who is against unethical practices.Wonder if such a person is available....!!!!!

Regarding market, despite the chairman or SEC market will move up when collection is over.

After researching about Asanga's previous works and sayings, putting him to protect the investors is like putting a wolf to protect the chicken. What would be better is pair him with Dill or Nimal or Sarath as DG. We could see Bangladesh II soon then. Other one could be suitable for parties and receptions.

When people say that he's a highly respected gentleman, chairman of that, doctor of this, sportsman there, member of club, the ones in full suit, traveling like James Bond with the actor's hair and all, it's a sure sign that person is a professional thief or a person who steal the limelight of other people's work. I remember there were posts about some other person some time back who was highly praised about his school days, professional gentleman, alwathurath niwala bonne, blah blah and then I've read he's a market manipulator king. You'll find the true gentleman deep down somewhere else. So next time somebody says Dr. who is highly respected gentleman blah blah, take it with a grain of salt.

Thilak was running a company, educated and has years of experience in stock market as I've read. Is there anything unsuitable about him for the job? The responsibility of the SEC is to protect the investors, monitor the transactions, find pump and dump schemes, investigate, keep law and order, punish the criminals. That's all. Thilak did just that. Why he was removed? Because he tried to protect the investors by investigating the criminal activity. Criminals got rid of him before the investigations get to them. SEC is not the promoters of the market. They are the regulators.

SEC for share market is the PHI for restaurant. Do you see PHIs promoting hotels? Do you blame PHIs when the hotels not doing well?

Just a bit from history...about the Aunty ... Very Happy and guess who endorsed it...!

http://sundaytimes.lk/110724/BusinessTimes/bt33.html

.......Mr Perera’s controversial remarks justifying insider trading (the way he saw it) drew a lot of comment and discussion at the event in Colombo this week organized by the Sri Lanka Institute of Directors (SLID).

On regulations and how they should be applied, he said that whatever said and done insider dealings would be irreversible as it is the force behind the Sri Lankan market. He said that most of these investors used to meet each other in funerals and parties, etc and when they meet they would also discuss about business and spontaneously speak of the performances of their corporate achievements that would sometimes form ‘inside information’ which is genuine and spoken with ‘good-faith’.

As an example he said when he goes to a funeral he would meet an ‘aunty’ and casually speak to her of the excellent achievements of his company and the discussion might slip to what is called ‘inside information’ and that information this ‘aunty’ might pass on to her ‘boyfriend.’ Asanga Seneviratna, Director, Nations Lanka Finance, another panelist, acknowledged some of the sentiments expressed by Mr Perera.

...Wooohahahahah...... Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
