For me NEST DY ( Bought in year 2005)
For the FY 2011 around 44%
For the FY 2012 27%+ waiting for the final

So calculating dividend yield in the current market price is absurt.
Go for the history of ROE,EPS,DP the decide what you need to do.

For an Investor seeking the Dividend Yield will go by todays Market Price as he will decide to invest in current market conditions....Since NEST has appreciated alot since it got listed , the newcomers would compare based on todays price.

At the same time i think what the new fellows should do is to go by NAV & EPS know .... Rolling Eyes

Certainly, no doubt.
For me I'll insisist ROE also to be taken into consideration.
But remember the phrase that most of the investment companies use.
"Past performance is not a guide to what might happen in the future. The value of investments and the income from them can go down as well as up so you may get back less than you invested."

@ Redbulls - Re NEST : When Price to Book Ratio is over 20 times, ROE Better be high ! In other words, just as important as a high ROE is, it is attractive only when your Price to Book Value Ratio is relatively low. Otherwise meaningless and as Warren Buffet says, you pay a high Price for a cheery consensus !

Million time you are correct. NEST an example I offered to the DY.
For me the selection vary to counter to counter.
Some times we need to see the top 20 list, Foreign holding, etc etc to come for a decent decision.
Share trading /investing is not like going to a shop and pick a stuff. (Which most of our novices lack knowledge on that)

Thanks Shri for sharing. By the way I have a question in calculating DY. As you are aware, DY changes as the price changes every day. ?Does that mean that we have to calculate it daily.

if you want to know the Dividend yield for comparing with other companies, then you should take the last traded price for all companies. Same goes with calculation P/E, P/BV as well. These are price related.

Dividend Yield of a company = current price of share / Annual dividend for the rececnt year.

ex:
So yield will naturally change when share price changes. Nest was a 8% divicend company when share price was 600 . But now with Rs 1600 is is around 3% only.

I won't call the way you calculated the yield for NEST incorrect as such. You are getting a high yield on your then investment at the moment (although it is not actually the dividend yield). The point is, you are sitting on a huge unrealized capital gain at the moment, and if you realize that profit and invest in another company with higher div yield, you will get a higher absolute dividend.

Yes, on the other hand they have big investors like EPF hoping dividends..

Yes, on the other hand they have big investors like EPF hoping dividends..

LGL has paid 1.50/- dividend both in 2011 and 2012. On both occasions it was a payout of more than 50-60%
Given the 9 month interim report, they just might be able to pay around that amount this time too (might be same or bit less)

But looking at the cashflow, on both occasions, they had enough free cashflow to pay. In fact last year they had paid the whole of it while rolling on the debt. So far during the 9 years, they have a negative FCF mainly due to increase in receivables and increase in capital expenditure. So I say it depends on how the last quarter turns out to be.

highly unlikely.

the 5.50/- they gave last year was a first and final. So the final 'may' not be as high this time.

Add RENU to the list then.. As much as a HAYC an investment trust, RENU is also an investment trust comes as a hotel..So it has a value than the current market value due to the unseen NAV by holding the shares of companies..
BTW, does ur last real name starts with "T"? Very Happy

I think out of banking stocks, DFCC will give you a better return. For the last 3-4 years they have given a good dividend. More importantly DFCC run still to be started.
