I am not sure whether this is a new development or not.

Today we could see two Airbus A 380 s from Dubai to Australia were flying overhead Mattala. They were flying closely to each other @ 35,000 and 37,000 ft.

As far as I know they had to fly in different flight routes earlier via Indian and Singapore FIR.

Another Emirates B777 took the same route 20 mins later.

Its a good sign.. as first, all long distances carriers will fly over Mattala without any stop ove. then after realizing the surrounding & abilities of Mattal..they 'll select Mattala as a Refueling Stop over ...But unfortunately yesterday a Bird hit a front wind shield of a Male Cmb [Via Mattala} Sri Lankan at 11,000 ft & this could become a concerning factor for major carriers such as Emirates, BA, Qantas, who is eying Mattala as their one & only stop over point to & from Down Under...

[The newly constructed Mattala International Air Port is too close to the Boondala National Bird Park which is a destination of Migrating Birds during specific periods of the year...!]

@Chinwi, this is strange. Have A380 carriers got insurance cover to make emergency landings in Mattala already?

Plus that website is quite cool

Earlier an Emirates A380 stop over at Katunayake for refulling. Emirates has the largest fleet of A380s & hope they will come us soon.

It's more cost effective for European airlines( than middle east base airlines) to stop over in Sri Lanka before they head toward Australia & New Zealand.

But when they resume coming back to Sri Lanka..... I dont know.

BA is planning to restart their flights to Sri Lanka this year.

( However I believe Hambantota is a wrong location for the much needed second airport)

Sorry. As per the data sheet, they are flying to Auckland, New Zealand. ( via Sydney) .

@ rainmaker,
I have no means to know about clearance.

Wonderful BUNDALA

I can recall wonderful nights we spent in Bundala many years ago. We had free access to Bundala jungle those days as we constructed some water ways inside the jungle area. There were always thousands of birds of various kinds including the famous Painted Stork, it was a heaven for bird watching .
After dark we usually move towards the beach to entertain the wonderful natural environment till midnight. Fishing folks provide fresh “Isso" for the “bite" and some campfire to keep the wild giants away.
We spend many hours in the dark , under the stars, watching and hearing the sound of the Indian Ocean in the chilly brackish breeze.
At any time you may encounter the wild elephants roaming in the area . I had narrow escapes several times.
Few years later the Wildlife Dept. has acquired the entire area in to their control.

Mattala is some what away from Bundala. As far as I can remember, main path of bird migrating from North is not coming across Mattala. They go either side of the country.

Bird migrating from and to Bundala may face and create problems with the low flying aircraft to Mattala especially during migrating seasons if they cross the approaching aircraft from the West end above Ambilipitiya.

When I was there few days ago, I did not see any flocks of birds residing closer to Mattala airport.

Weerawila airport, much closer to Bundala and to 5 tanks of Thissa is functioning for many years.(turboprop planes )

Muttala is also home to over 400 elephants according to researchers using radio tracking. Eventually an elephant will break the electric fence surrounding the airport and stumble on to the run way and smack. and you though a bird hit was someting worry about

As far as I know Mattala has no clearance for A380 yet.
With only 30 Tons of fuel at the dump presently, no sensible carrier will allow one of their aircraft to land at Mattala, even in dire safety / security situation developed overhead Mattal.
I think Bird strike / sucking in is far more serious than a herd of wild elephants go berserk.

Those long haul flights has no reason to land in Mattala or Katunayake for refueling other than a an emergency landing. I work in airline industry and I have seen airports been developed as they fully operational. I see the flight paths have been changed but does it really mean that we are earning something from the airport? If they land for sure they have to pay the landing fees and parking fees ground handling fees etc.

What Katunayake needs at this moment is more parking and another terminal that is it.

My point is if they have spend the money towards katunayake airport and if they could relocate the air-force base and build another terminal there we could have been challenge Singapore. At least could see more traffic build up in Katunayake.

When the big operators see the traffic build up they eventually increase their flights to Katunayake and generate more money and at the same time our own Airlines can make some buck from ground handling/catering of course the traffic etc.
