Colombo Stock market indices advanced further on Wednesday increasing the market cap by LKR 26bn (+1.1%). 14 day Relative Strength Index on ASI passed the oversold threshold of 30 to 37.

Broad market index advanced by 62.88 points (1.11%) to end at 5,730.21 while S&P SL 20 Index gained 28.27 points (0.90%) and closed at 3,178.96. Price appreciations in Ceylon Tobacco by 8.6% (closed at LKR 1,139.90), Chevron Lubricants by 3.8% (closed at LKR 275.00) and Asian Hotels & Properties by 3.5% (closed at LKR 65.00) contributed favorably to the market performances.

Daily market turnover reached LKR 1.2bn, which was the highest recorded after five week period. John Keells Holdings which was among the heavily traded stocks emerged as the largest contributor to the market turnover with LKR 846mn and accounted for 72% of the total turnover. Further, Sampath Bank and Commercial Bank recorded the next top turnover levels of LKR 123mn and LKR 35mn respectively.

Several crossings were recorded in John Keells Holdings (~1.4mn shares at LKR 209.00 per share) and Sampath Bank (~0.6mn shares at LKR 180.00 per share). The total value of the crossings accounted for 34% of the market turnover of the day.

Further heavy retail participation was seen in HVA Foods (closed at LKR 10.10, up by 16%), E-Channelling (closed at LKR 7.50, up by 10%)and Blue Diamond non-voting (closed at LKR 1.00, up by 25%)where the stocks closed with more than 10% gains.

Foreign participation was 43% whilst recording a net inflow of LKR 712mn. Net foreign inflow was seen in John Keells Holdings (LKR 559mn), Sampath Bank (LKR 113mn) and Commercial Bank (LKR 34mn)

Cash map ended at 40%.

The Colombo bourse yesterday sustained Tuesday’s gains with the All Share Price Index up 62.88 points (1.1%) and S&P SL20 up 28.27 points (0.90%) with a turnover of Rs. 1.17 billion, up from the previous day’s Rs.629.7 million, with 163 gainers comfortably outpacing 51 losers while 99 counters closed flat.

Brokers said that market mover JKH saw heavy volumes traded but closed flat at Rs.209 at which price there were six crossing of nearly 1.4 million shares in deals worth Rs.287.6 million.

On the trading floor JKH topped the turnover league with nearly 2.7 million shares done between Rs.208.90 and Rs.212 contributing Rs.558.6 million to the day’s business volumes.

"Most stocks other than JKH saw upward price movements," a broker said. "We hope there was foreign buying in JKH which will be good for the market. We also saw a little retail activity."

Sampath Bank too saw two crossings of over 0.6 million shares at Rs.180 contributing Rs.112.8 million to turnover.

Commercial Bank (voting) closed a rupee up at Rs.115 on 0.3 million shares done between Rs.114 and Rs.115 generating a turnover of Rs.35.2 million while Access Engineering gained 20 cents to close at Rs.20.70 on over 1.2 million shares done between Rs.20.50 and Rs.20.70 contributing Rs25.3 million to turnover.

Other than JKH, all other most traded stocks yesterday posted price gains with Chevron doing best closing Rs.10 up at Rs.275 on 16,311 shares.

Guardian closed 10 cents up at Rs.174 on 0.1 million shares, Sampath 30 cents up at Rs.179.90 on 55,715 shares, E-Channeling 70 cents up at Rs.7.50 on over 0.8 million shares and NTB 10 cents up at Rs.58 on 93,943 shares.

Autodrome announced an interim dividend of Rs.3 per share for 2013/14, XD from Sept. 23 and with payment on Oct. 02.
