ASPI down 0.02 pct, S&P SL 20 down 0.28 pct

Stocks closed yesterday with the benchmark All Share Price Index down 0.02 percent closing 0.99 points below the previous day at 5,774.10 and S&P SL 20 down 0.28 percent to close at 8.75 points below at 3,165.88 with 91 losers ahead of 64 gainers.

The turnover increased to Rs. 835 million from Rs. 254 million reported the previous day, with 90.7 million shares changing hand yesterday.

Foreign buying increased to 167 million from Rs. 68.6 million the previous day, while foreign selling too increased to Rs. 199 million from Rs. 32 million resulting in a net outflow of Rs. 32 million.

" The ASPI gave back intraday gains during the last hour of trading, ending broadly flat. Market turnover was dominated by crossings on CLC, OGL, PCHH, and LIOC, as well as retail activity on JKH," John Keells Stock Brokers said.

"Indices extended its lackluster pattern as the benchmark index settled on marginal grounds at 5,774.10 points after having dipped 11 points at its intra-day low of 5,763.47. However the S&P SL20 index settled with a larger dip of 8 points on account of losses in Sri Lanka Telecom (-3.6%), Carson Cumberbatch (-2.3%) and Bukit Darah (-2.3%)," Softlogic Stockbrokers said.

"Focus on Lanka IOC and Commercial Leasing and Finance continued as the former registered two blocks totaling 3 mn shares at a 52-week high (off-board) price of LKR33.0 while the latter recorded a block of 18.2 mn shares at a 52-week high (off-board) price of LKR5.0. On-board interest in LIOC remained strong as it touched LKR34.1 (+5.6%) at its intra-day high level. Renewed interest was seen in Orient Garments as it added 3 crossings accumulating to 15.8 mn shares to the crossings board at LKR8.0. PCH Holdings recorded a block of 25.5 mn shares at LKR2.0. The above 7 crossings contributed 44% to the day’s turnover," the firm said.

"Interest emerged in Lanka IOC, Laugfs Gas Voting and Non-Voting reflecting the positive sentiment in the global energy industry. The former counters gained 2.5% and 2.8% at their respective closing price levels while the latter closed flat. High market caps; John Keells Holdings, Ceylon Tobacco Company and Commercial Bank saw significant interest. JKH spearheaded the day’s turnover however its price dipped 0.5% at its close amidst some selling pressure."
