Despite media reports that the government might dissolve parliament this week in order to ensure the holding of elections in early April, The Sunday Morning learns that the government is looking at dissolving parliament during the first week of March.

Secretary to the President, Dr. P. B. Jayasundera had recently requested details from the Elections Commission about the dates for nominations and the holding of election in the event parliament is dissolved on 2 March.

A senior Government source told The Sunday Morning that the government would look at dissolving parliament early March as planned earlier and look at an election date towards end of April.

“We (the government) will need the support of the opposition to form the two-thirds majority in parliament to dissolve the House earlier than the previously planned date. However, there are doubts whether the opposition would support such a motion in parliament,” the senior government source said, adding that the in the event the opposition did not support the motion resulting in its defeat in parliament, the government did not want to commence its election campaign following a defeat.

It is also learnt that parliament would be dissolved on 2 March and the general election is expected to be held on 25 April. Nominations are likely to be called between 11th and 17th April.

The new parliament is likely to convene early May.

Balangoda Mayor allegedly pours kerosene on vegetables

Mayor of the Balangoda Urban Council (UNP) Chamika Wewagedara has destroyed a stock of vegetables set for sale, by pouring kerosene over them, vendors said.

One vendor said that they had transported a stock of vegetables from Bandarawela adding that they were unaware of the fact that the Ratnapura area was still under curfew.

"As we had no way to go back to Bandarawela along with the vegetables, we prepared them for sale for people at very reasonable prices. However, the Balangoda Mayor who rushed to the location, poured kerosene over the vegetables," he said. It was absolutely unfair to act in such a ruthless manner," the vendor added.

The vendors urged President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to look into the incident and take action against the Mayor.

Meanwhile, the Balangoda Mayor said the Municipal Council officers had informed the concerned vendors several times, requesting them not to sell vegetables in the area. “However, they did not heed our officers and continued to sell the vegetables," the Mayor said.

"It is my duty and responsibility to act in accordance with the orders of the Governor and to see everything is in place in the municipality" the Mayor added.(Sheain Fernandopulle)
