With torrential rains experienced in most parts of Island within the past 72 hours, reservoirs storage level had grown remarkably, Systems Control Division of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said yesterday.

These improvement in the catchments and the high coal intake by the CEB, had pushed the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) to release some fuel varieties at concession rates to independent power producers (IPPs).

According to senior CEB engineers, water levels in the reservoirs had increased by more than 50 per cent in comparison to the corresponding period last year. With the current weather pattern the Met Department expects more rains in the hydro catchments.

By yesterday noon reservoir storage level stood at Castlereagh  93.3%, Mousakelle 89.4%, Kotmale 89.4%, Victoria 90.6%, Randenigala 40.5% and Samanalwewa 32.5%.

However, hydro dispatch level storage level stood at 368, 576MWh or 40.90 per cent of the total electricity generation of 30,555MWh. In other words CEB hydro generation stood at 16447 MWh.

Available hydro capacity by yesterday noon at Wimalasurendra 1000MWh, Laxapana 1000MWh, New Laxapana 2500MWh, Polpitiya 1900MWh,  Victoria 3500MWh, Kotmale 3500MWh, Samanalawewa 2900 MWh, and Kukule 1900MWh. However, due to energy mix, CEB generation had not fully utilized the available quantity, it is reliably learnt.

Meanwhile, several families residing in the Samanalagama area in Hatton have been shifted to safer locations by the Ambagamuwa Divisional Secretary due to a risk of landslides, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said yesterday.

The Centre’s Assistant Director, Pradeep Kodippili said 28 persons belonging to some seven families have been evacuated and sent to a temporary shelter.

According to Nuwara Eliya District Secretary D.P.G. Kumarasiri, measures were taken to evacuate the families following a notice issued by the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO).

He said that the inclement weather conditions which had affected the central mountain region in the country for the past several days, has somewhat eased by yesterday.

CEB is a den of crooks. Minister Ranawaka has exposed some of their dirty deals. As consumers have no other option and regulatory authorities are on the side of the CEB these crooks are fleecing the public. The water in the reservoirs will be let out to the sea without been used for power generation. It is time that some social minded lawyers get together and initiate legal action against the authorities and expose their fowl acts.
