Market was in negative ground throughout the day to end marginally lower. Selling pressure on selected blue chips continued into today with most retail active counters also slowing down with the exception of Odel. There were no large parcels traded today. There is a possibility of a rights issue on Odel with large stakes expected to change hands according to an article posted on an online business news website. It is interesting to note that the share price of Odel moved up by around 42.5% before this announcement was made.
It seems the drop in the yields of all three Treasury bills have had little impact on the market. ASI dipped 7.69 points (0.16%) to close at 4,876.19, MPI lost 10.13 points (0.24%) to close at 4,279.28 and the S&P index lost 6.4 points (0.23%) to close at 2,755.59. Turnover was Rs. 266 million. Most active counters for the day were Odel, HVA Foods and Swarnamahal Financial Services. Top contributors to turnover were Odel with Rs. 52.7 million, Distilleries with Rs. 26 million and Carson Cumberbatch with Rs. 23 million.
Notable gainers for the day were Odel up by 15% to close at Rs. 25.80, MTD Walkers up by 9% to close at Rs. 24.50 and Ceylon Cold Stores up by 6% to close at Rs. 125. Notable losers for the day were Colonial Motors down by 6% to close at Rs. 184.50, Colombo Fort Land and Building down by 4% to close at Rs. 25.20 and Colombo Land down by 3.70% to close at Rs. 31.20. Foreign participation was 7.5% of market turnover whilst foreigners were net buyers of Rs. 3.9 million.
