People are advised not to remain on the coasts in Jaffna, Trincomalee, Mullaitivu and Batticaloa due to cyclonic conditions, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) said.

The Department of Meteorology earlier announced that the depression in the Bay of Bengal would develop into a marginal cyclone within today.

The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal was centered about 200 km east of Mullattivu coast this morning.

“It is likely to move westward causing heavy showers and strong winds over most parts of the country and surrounding sea areas. It is expected to intensify further in to a marginal cyclone (not severe) and move over northern part of Sri Lanka tonight,” the Department said.

Fishing and naval communities were requested to be vigilant about the strong winds, showery weather and rough seas in the sea areas off the coast from Mannar to Batticaloa via Jaffna and Trincomalee.

People residing within 500 metres from the coastal belt from Kuchchaweli to Jaffna are being evacuated due to the possible threat of a minor cyclone, which said to enter the country from the Mullaitivu coast around 2 am tomorrow, officials said.

A spokesman for the Disaster Management Centre said the evacuation process began a short while ago with the help of the police, military and respective government officials in these areas.

Graphic above shows that cyclone is moving towards south & eastern parts of India instead of west coast of Sri Lanka. Whatever, heavy rain ended long drought scantily experienced by poor farmers at least giving them water to drink.

Renovation of tanks in remote areas launched by officials should preserve the water capacity needed for agricultural purposes after rainy season ends. Hope,, at least that job is done with good intention for the benefit of poor segment of the country.
