Most hilarious is that they are planing to dig two tunnels to save people in affected areas from floods.

A Minister said the two tunnels they cut will drain future floods to sea , so no problem thereafter.

They still have no idea about the amount of water came along Kelani river and amount of rainfall received in upper areas.

They do not have any idea about the quantity of earth to be dug, funding needed, machinery needed, time needed to build such enormous structures to drain 2-3 times of Kelani rivers. The destruction to the entire city is unthinkable if they try it. Fortunately no govt. can find money for such a project.

We construct tunnels to divert local floods occur due to local rain water.

Anyone can see a big drain is being built along Wijerama Mw Col 7 currently, under the roadway.

Rainwater flooding and river flooding are two different subjects .
The recent flood occurred due to heavy flow of water came from upper catchments of Kelani river. It was a 30 year flood. All the waters fallen in high intensity to a wast area in hills make the huge flow and inundate lower areas. You cannot prevent future flooding of the areas affected by current floods by making tunnels.

Unfortunately no one in relevant Govt and private institutes or in Universities come forward to correct these misleading statements.

Yes Chinwi, one of the reasons for flooding is reclamation of wetlands in and around Colombo. As explained by you the two tunnels is a big joke and if constructed, may be used for nefarious activities for the next 30 years. Govt.’s 4 year development plan coming soon! Icon_lol

Poor town planning, filling low land, unauthorized construction over years & years had caused current flooding to greater extent. All ruling parties are jointly & severally responsible what they had done to this country.
