Freight rates begin to rise as Shanghai slowly reopens for business

“Factories are reopening bunch by bunch, upon approval, in the areas around Shanghai,” confirmed one local forwarder.

COPENHAGEN, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Maersk (MAERSKb.CO) raised its 2022 profit guidance for a second time on Tuesday after beating quarterly revenue expectations as congested global supply chains that have boosted freight rates persist longer than expected.
The shipping industry has seen record profits in recent quarters due to a surge in consumer demand and pandemic-related logjams holding up containers in key ports in China, Europe and the United States.

"Congestion in global supply chains leading to higher freight rates has continued longer than initially anticipated," Maersk said in a statement.
It now expects underlying earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of around $37 billion versus the $30 billion it forecast earlier. Maersk had initially expected full-year EBITDA at $24 billion.
The new guidance is based on a gradual normalisation in ocean container shipping in the fourth quarter of this year. Its previous guidance was based on that happening early in the second half of the year. read more

The Copenhagen-based company is often seen as a barometer for global trade as it transports goods for retailers and consumer companies such as Walmart, Nike and Unilever.
Electrolux, Europe's biggest home appliances maker, last month missed second-quarter profit expectations in part due to supply chain problems, but said the supply chain situation looked better for the third and fourth quarters. read more

German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd (HLAG.DE) last week also raised its earnings outlook for 2022.
Maersk, one of the world's biggest container shippers with a market share of around 17%, said in June that the cost of shipping goods was unlikely to abate anytime soon due to array of inflationary pressures. read more
Shares in Maersk were trading up 1.1% at 0825 GMTafter touching their highest levels since early June.
Revenue in the second quarter stood at $21.7 billion, it said, above the $19.7 billion forecast by analysts in a poll gathered by the company.
Underlying EBITDA was $10.3 billion, compared to the $8.2 billion forecast by analysts.
"The strong result is driven by the continuation of the exceptional market situation within ocean (container shipping)," the company said.
Maersk is due to publish a full set of results for the second quarter on August 3.

I am going to get a time machine to go back to 2014 and tell my uncle to keep his 3000 expo shares he bought @ 8 each. then tell him to hold it until 2021 to sell @ 300 each.

I kept 100 000 EXPO which I bought @3 for many years and because of the legal issue they had I decide not to keep it anymore. If I kept it would have sold @ 403 Very Happy

Reno Silva buys 6 million shares of Expo Lanka for 800 million rupees.

It is reported that Mr. Reno Silva, the chairman of ABC, has purchased 6 million shares of Expo Lanka Holdings, a leading company listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange. This transaction took place yesterday (22nd June 2023). According to reports, the purchase was made through Phantom Investments, an investment company owned by him. This is a percentage of 0.3% of the total number of shares issued by Expo Lanka Holdings.

And visit this site, https://www.investing.com/equities/expolanka-hldg-financial-summary#:~:text=Expolanka%20Holdings%20PLC%20reported%20earnings,31%2C354.65%20million%20a%20year%20ago. and you will find earnings which are unaudited. These are useful yet considered speculation, until we get audited financials. Also rumours only hurt investors and, ultimately cause unwanted tensions in forums like these and elsewhere too. import restrictions are getting eased and thats definitely good for expo.

the value of the us dollar (against lkr) recently decreased as the country showed some ‘artificial financial stability’, but according to financial experts it is believed that the dollar will gradually rise again. in a certain way dollar earners like expo will be positively affected as a result of this steady rise of the dollar value.

interest rates will go down further and that is very good for the colombo stock market.

if the market can maintain this momentum until it reach 11000 level, the future will be good for expo holders.

this is only my opinion. not a buying recommendation. thank you.

Import restrictions on 328 more items to be relaxed tonight (July 20, 2023)

Restrictions imposed on imported goods will be further relaxed later today (July 20), State Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya says.
Thereby, import restrictions on 328 more items will be eased.
The lawmaker said the gazette notification announcing the import restriction relaxation would be published tonight.
The announcement comes a month after the government relaxed import restrictions on 300 other items including electronic equipment, sanitaryware and food items with effect from June 09.
However, import restrictions on vehicles are unlikely to be lifted anytime soon. Speaking on the matter last month, Siyambalapitiya had said vehicle imports could not be allowed yet under the existing economic conditions.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Customs recently raised concerns with the Sectoral Oversight Committee (SOC) on National Economic & Physical Plans about reaching its target revenue as the task would prove difficult as long as the import restrictions on vehicles are in place.

to me, anything between 180 and 200 is realistic. dont forget that aspi will be playing a key role here. if aspi can reach 12000 level by the end of august, a cse giant like expo will naturally go even further.
